The Collective Anticipation of Spider-Man No Way Home

In case you missed it, the third Marvel Studios Spider-Man picture was on the verge of being cancelled. Disagreements between Disney and Sony Pictures Entertainment over the former's profit interest in the picture halted work in the summer of 2019. After the firms' discussions stagnated, it is said that Tom Holland used his clout to relaunch them.

Disney and Sony then decided to work together on a new Spider-Man picture and feature Holland’s version of the character in a yet-to-be-announced Marvel Studios film. According to the latest previews, the third episode of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man will be the webhead's most ambitious film yet.

In our collective anticipation of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ let’s break down all the confirmed updates we’ve received about the upcoming blockbuster hit.

The Final Casting

What does this mean for Peter Parker (Tom Holland)'s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically the Spider-Verse?

Holland has confirmed his comeback as Spider-Man. Zendaya returns as MJ, Jacob Batalon returns as Peter's best buddy Ned, and Marisa Tomei returns as Peter's aunt May Parker. Tony Revolori will reprise his role as Flash Thompson from Spider-Man: Far From Home, while J.K. Simmons will reprise his role as J. Jonah Jameson. His arrival, however, pointed to a future Spider-Man and the reappearance of certain familiar faces. This will be covered in greater depth later.

Jon Watts joins an elite group of filmmakers who have successfully navigated Marvel's machinery to create a full trilogy in the director's chair, with Peyton Reed and James Gunn expected to join him by 2023. Additionally, Amy Pascal, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, and producer Kevin Feige reprise their roles in Holland's Spider-Man for the third time.

The Old and the New Faces

Despite promises that it will be the biggest Spider-Man film ever made, the COVID-19 outbreak prompted the film's release date to be pushed back from July 2021 to the end of that year.

On October 1, 2020, it was reported that Jamie Foxx would play Electro, the character he portrayed in Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the flaws of which prompted Sony to approach Marvel about bringing Peter to the MCU. Despite the potential of Foxx playing a new Electro, many predicted that he will repeat his role from the first film.

A week later, Benedict Cumberbatch was confirmed to reprise his role as Doctor Strange. Strange was intended to play a mentor, replacing Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in Far From Home. Strange appears to be more of a "co-conspirator" than a mentor in the teaser video for August 2021. Strange then gives Peter a new task in the November teaser, despite their periodic disagreements.

Strange will reprise his position as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022, which appears to be a pivotal point in the Multiverse narrative centered on Phase 4. He will most certainly become aware of the Loki predicament in addition to returning to WandaVision strands.

The Much-Awaited Date of Release

The film will be released on December 17th, 2021, a date that seemed uncertain following the debut of the trailer in August. Sony is determined to get the picture in front of fans with less than a month until its release.

It comes as no surprise that Marvel supporters and Spider-Man fanatics alike are on the edge of their seats! With these updates, all we can do is wait and enjoy the anticipation of the upcoming movie. In the meantime, we suggest you go on a Marvel or Spider-Man movie marathon at home or reread your comics.
